Good Info. on a Fine Car

I'm an experienced DIY car guy who inherited my Dad's pristine 2003 Volvo V-2.4T wagon. Although I'll leave any major work to the pros, I needed all the basics for maintenance and minor repairs. This book does it! I've trusted Haynes manuals for many years on several cars and this edition has the familiar format, fixes accompanied by detailed photos, troubleshooting guides, etc. It's printed for the U.K. version, so driver's side is on the right, but Volvo builds for the world market, so it's virtually identical in other respects. Plus the manual will often state variances for Canadian models or changes made in certain model years. Not as specific as a true shop manual from Volvo, but if you're looking for one overall source for a modest price, this could be your book.

Very disappointed with this manual. I have another one of these Haynes manuals for my 2005 Chysler and its way better then this. The reason I purchased this manual was because of the other Haynes manual. The pictures are way to small and the way its laid out is very disjointed.

But I knew this when I ordered it Haynes
doesn't print a US version of this book I
don't know why all torque specs are in
European spec's but the repair procedures
as the US version's of Volvo's cars.

Foot stompin good!

Three of L'amour's westerns recieved special accolades. "Down the Long Hills" recieved the golden spur in 1968. "Hondo" and "Flint" were voted in among the best 25 westerns of all time by the Western Writers Association. "Flint" is throw your hat in the air foot stompin good! L'amour's descriptions of the terrain saddle up the reader's brain pan and ride it to the Malpais lava beds in New Mexico. The action is fast and the story well and intelligently written. L'amour's "Flint" and his best western "Conagher" leave most other westerns eatin trail dust.

The Best

I've read every Louis L'Amour novel (a legacy from my father), and enjoyed them all.
Flint is my favorite. The character development and plot development are both phenomenal, and the descriptions of fight scenes are great as well. I'm a sucker for the 'orphan raised by gunslinger' theme, as well, I guess ... I really like the background story for Flint.
I think the theme which dominated for me, in the book, was the attention to the fact that since Flint believes he will die anyway (and has nothing to live for, regardless) -- he becomes such a dangerous man to the villains -- because he doesn't play by the rules they're used to -- he attacks them head-on.
In the end, Flint is like a good cup of hot cocoa, or your favorite homemade meal ... it's comfort food for me as a reader, and I have to dive into it every once and awhile.

L'Amour's most insightful

I'm a big fan of this author, a tradition passed down through my family. My high school English teacher was apalled when she saw me reading one of his books, and laughed at me in front of the class. She's one of the type that only read stuff like Lord of the Flies or Grapes of Wrath. I'll admit that it's not high literature, but for an American adventure writer, L'Amour certainly did his best. Flint contains a unique story unequaled by many of the most symbolic novels or short stories. The character development, description, and emotion are powerful and moving, as well as the sense of breath-taking adventure characteristic of L'Amour at his best. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes adventure, Western, American, romance, and just generally good novels.

Another classic Taoist text

Chuang Tzu, The Inner Chapters, translated by Solala Towler, Watkins Publishing, London, 2010, 192 ff.

Chuang Tzu (or Zhuangzi) is both the title and the author of a classic Taoist text that may have originated as far back as the 4th century BCE. This would make it contemporary with the ‘Tao Te Ching’ of Lao Tzu, but some scholars put Lao Tzu and the school he founded as early as the 6th century BCE.

According to Dr Russell Kirkland, an Associate Professor of Religion at the University of Georgia in the USA, it is more likely that the Chuang Tzu is the work of another much later Taoist, Kuo Hsiang, from the 3rd century CE. The work of 33 chapters has come down to us in three parts. Part 1, The Inner Chapters, comprises7 chapters; Part 2 called The Outer Chapters is the main part of the work consisting of 15 chapters; and the remaining 11 chapters comprise The Mixed Chapters, thought to have been written by various authors.

It is this first part that is presented here in a translation by Solala Towler, a Taoist scholar and author of 12 books on Qigong and the Taoist arts. The text is presented as a succession of stories between sages and their students explaining some of the principles of Taoism. There are also various sections of commentary by Towler. The text is lavishly illustrated by inspiring black-and-white photographs, many taken by Towler himself.

The presentation, both in the text and in its production, reflects the mystical nature of the content. Personally, I find the Taoist message more direct in the Tao Te Ching and I relate less well to this story-telling approach; but this says more about me than about the text. There is a quote from the Tao in the text, which is an accurate reflection of Taoist thought: ‘In the pursuit of knowledge / every day something more is added. / In the pursuit of Tao / every day something is let go of.’ This expresses the essential wu wei of Taoist thought – of accepting life as it is, of taking time out for reflection and meditation, to respect all living things, and always living in such a way as to enhance the lives of others as far as we are able.

Best translation!

As a student of the Chinese Classics, I have picked up the Chuang Tzu many times. However, every time I came away feeling that there was something deeper that I just wasn't getting! Now I realize that the other translators were just getting too heady, and the purity of the original work was lost.

About the Author
Roland Case is the executive director of the Critical Thinking Consortium (TC2) a non-profit association of school districts and educational organizations across Canada. He is a retired professor of social studies education at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. Roland has edited or authored over 100 published works. Notable among these is the award-winning series of TC2 teaching resources entitled Critical Challenges Across the Curriculum. In addition to his public school and university teaching, Roland has worked with over 18,000 educators across Canada and in the United States, England, Israel, Russia, India, Finland, and Hong Kong to support the infusion of critical thinking. Roland was the 2006 recipient of the Distinguished Academics Career Achievement Award from the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC (CUFA). Penney Clark is a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the University of British Columbia and the director of the History Education Network/Histoire et éducation en réseau (THEN/HiER). She was awarded the Killam Teaching Prize in 2005 for her teaching of social studies curriculum and instruction, the history of curriculum, and the politics of curriculum development courses at UBC. She co-authored three Canadian history textbooks and has published articles in the Journal of Canadian Studies, Canadian Journal of Education, American Journal of Education, History of Education Quarterly, and Theory and Research in Social Education. Her most recent publication is the edited volume, New Possibilities for the Past: Shaping History Education in Canada (UBC Press, 2011).
