Great research and art

The team of historians headed by Edward Shaughnessy did a fantastic job on this book, covering the most interesting fascets of imperial China (and its legacy in 20th century China). But the illustrations were my favorite part. The Chinese were masters at fusing beauty with function. Some of their inventions, artworks, and everyday tools make the West seem so clumsy. The captions are meaty and provide for good reading as well. I only wish the book were longer and went into more detail. A must have for China lovers!

Wonderful into to China

I bought this book as a gift for my sister who went to China this year but I ended up keeping it for myself. So many illustrated books on Asia only pick out what's exotic and exploit it. This book, however, offers an even-handed introduction to China's past, focusing on politics, philosophy, technology, daily life and the arts. The section on beliefs is particularly fresh. I learned so much, yet I didn't feel the book wowed me with pieces of jade and the like that so often show us how we'd like to see imperial China, not how it really was.

Good for an Overview

This book was great for a college student like me, who knew nothing of China. The chapters are separated into easily digestible segments. There are lots of images for references, too. The class I used it with, though, uses this as backround information and anything more detailed are in separate books entirely. This is a good book to start learning about China, or even a place to cross-reference ideas.

Discrete choice theory originated in travel demand studies in the early sixties. Since then, the power of this approach has been recognized and it has been elaborated as a theoretical and empirical tool for studying urban economies and housing markets. In this book, Anderson, de Palma and Thisse take another step whcih is crucial in realizing the full value of discrete choice theory: they show how this approach can be used to study almost all important aspects of a market with differentiated products. Their contribution is important in that it links discrete choice theory with the theory of industrial organization.

A fun romp

I've been bouncing around trying various new authors when I hit this one. It is engrossing. It's basically a sci-fi mystery/spy story. It's a quick read, but what the author does particularly well is get in the head of an alien that is... alien. Axira does not think like a normal person. Moreover, despite being ridiculously powerful, she has good reasons to not use those powers, and still runs into problems with tipping her hand. Add in the fact that she's far from all-knowing, and you have a powerful character who doesn't fit in trying not to stand out, while figuring out what's going on behind the scenes. Add some solid supporting characters, and you have a very enjoyable romp.

This was a very good book. I have read the entire series so far and I am waiting for the next installment. This series follows the life of Axira, a spacer who is trying to reinvent herself after years of serving her master. I only had one problem with this series, the price. The books are very short, less than 150 pages each, and the rest of the books are $3.99 each. I usually only buy how much it cost per page, so these books should be $1.50. Don’t get me wrong, I read the first book for free, the next day I went and bought the rest of the series and read all of them in 3 days. When you start to read the books you will be addicted instantly.

Much better plotted then Bell's usual work. A member of an ancient race breaks from captivity and chooses to do good by joining the Academy. Lacks the usual formula romance of Bell's usual work and benefits from the lack. A short novel that could use more development.

Hence, the major contribution of this book is to identify and characterize the key bridges-so far only partly recognized- between the PCA and several other disciplines. Based on the results of the bridge-building endeavor, the editors will propose an initial formulation of the PCA as a meta-theory. It is intended as a generic framework to solve complex, social problems and to stimulate further research and development concerning the human species in relationship to its environment.

About the Author

Jeffrey H. D. Cornelius-White, Psy.D., LPC is Professor of Counseling at Missouri State University and doctoral faculty at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is former editor of The Person-Centered Journal and former chair of the World Association for Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapy and Counseling. He has published more than 75 works, including Learner-Centered Instruction (Sage, 2010 with Adam Harbaugh), Facilitating Young People’s Development (PCCS, 2008 with Michael Behr), and Carl Rogers: The China Diary (PCCS, 2012). Jef studied at the Chicago Counseling Center and the Pre-Therapy Institute and is a graduate of Argosy University-Chicago. He enjoys cycling, volleyball, his friends and family.

Renate Motschnig-Pitrik, born in Ostrava, Czech Republic, is a professor of computer science and head of the Computer Science Didactics and Learning Research Center at the University of Vienna, Austria. Renate held positions at the RWTH Aachen in Germany, the University of Toronto, Canada, and teaches and cooperates with the Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. She participated in encounter groups and several events based on the Person-Centered Approach. She is deeply interested in the multiple ways in which mutual understanding and whole-person learning happen. She is an author/co-author of more than 130 scientific articles, one book, and is determined to foster a style in education that is based on person-centered attitudes, our co-actualizing potential, and thoughtful support by web-based technology. She appreciates synergies between presence and distance, and a multitude of (scientific) disciplines and cultures.

Michael Lux, born in Stuttgart, Germany, has Master degrees in psychology and gerontology. He is a certified person-centered psychotherapist and works as a psychotherapist and neuropsychologist in the Neurological Rehabilitation Center Quellenhof in Bad Wildbad, Germany. Over the past few years, he has been intensively engaged with linkages between the Person-Centered Approach (PCA) and neuroscience. As a result he developed the model of a neuroscientifically based person-centered psychotherapy, which he described in a book and in scientific articles. Furthermore, he gives lectures and workshops on the neuroscientific bases of the PCA at conferences and training institutes.

California emergency-room physician Brown here supplements tales of his own experiences with contributions from almost 100 other doctors and nurses in a volume that is by turn tense, poignant and amusing. ER personnel confront the entire range of human life from its beginning to its end, but hardest to bear, they find, are crib deaths and futile attempts to resuscitate child and teenage accident victims, not so much because the ERs are traumatized by mortality but because they must deal with the survivors. Among their least favorite patients are unwashed derelicts and near-psychotics high on drugs or liquor. Regarded as a minor annoyance are malingerers and hypochondriacs, who waste the resources of the ERs. There are funny stories here as well, like the one about the doctor who was misunderstood when he requested a stool from a patient, meaning a chair.

Powerful

This little orange book has a lot to recommend it: The stories are powerful, sometimes for the hope they give, sometimes for the horror they reveal, sometimes for both. The writing is clear and easy to read, and goes by quickly. Perhaps most impressively, the pace and rhythm are such that in spite of the peaks of emotion achieved, burnout is avoided, with humor and hope slipping in to defuse the horror just when as it becomes too great to contain, and horror making its appearance just when we are so uplifted that we should burst. These are the best of the stories collected from over 15,000 ER staff members, so if you want to know the extremes of life at your local Emergency Room, don't bother with TV's ER, read this book instead.

Non-fiction that reads like a page-turner thriller

EMERGENCY! is nonfiction that reads like a page-turner novel. This book contains over 100 vignettes written by emergency room doctors and nurses all over the country. Some are dark and sad, some are hopeful and uplifting, most are gruesome, and all are so compelling that you can't help but go on to the next. I don't think I have a particular penchant for morbidity, but I read this book in one afternoon.
There are stories of GOMERs (Get Out of My Emergency Room), elderly people barely hanging on to life who must be resusitated; patients with DSB (Drug-Seeking Behavior), who come in with an imagined complaint in hopes of getting narcotics; SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) babies; mothers having babies in cars; severed body parts; Code Blues; people with, er, complaints of a personal nature.
We meet a young man who needs a blood transfusion thanks to a stab wound, but won't get one because he carries a card in his wallet that states he's a Jehovah's Witness. Gastroenterologists try out their new toy; interns try to intubate patients; lab techs faint in patients' laps; everyone works long hours.
EMERGENCY! brings us straight into the ER, where we know the stress of trying to keep patients alive, and the anguish of family, friends, and staff left behind when it can't be done. You will cry, you will laugh, you will wonder why you are reading this book--but once you've started it, read it you will.

Truly moving slice of life from a medical perspective.

I love a book that brings home the drama of daily life in a way that makes you laugh and makes you cry. This book of short stories from the nations's emergency rooms covers everything from everyday mishaps to monumental tragedies; from the guy next door, to human monsters. Perhaps before the advent of the TV show, it may have seemed a bit graphic. But now that we all know how to perform our own kidney transplants, these anecdotes seem fairly tame. Some readers may not appreciate the author's familiarity with various bodily orifices and the unusual things that some people have used them for, so the book may not be OK for kids. My own kids who are in their early teens, and undisturbed by the fact that there's more to us than our fingers and toes, really enjoyed the book and were quite moved by some of the stories. So were many friends. A perfect "people-read." A great gift.

About the Author
Pam Mathis holds a B.A. and an M.A. in English from the University of Arkansas. She teaches at North Arkansas College in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, where she is the Director of College Preparatory and an English instructor. Her teaching experience involves college success skills, integrated reading and writing, all levels of composition, and American literature. Like all English teachers, she loves to read and always has "a couple of books going" no matter how busy she is. She lives in Harrison, Arkansas, with her husband and a menagerie of various animals. They enjoy two sons and two grandsons.

This book arrived, it says instructors version on it. I needed a student version, which, according to the details of the page for this book, I thought it was. Im very upset that it wasn't stated in the details because now I have to do a ton of other work to get the right one and not from these people.
