No Swedish musician has made such an impact as Yngwie Malmsteen. His finesse, attitude and fantastic guitar playing was unparalleled when he surfaced in the early 1980's.
As Above, So Below - The Unauthorized Yngwie Biography is a revealing story about how he became what he is today. It is a fury fueled story about extreme passion and determination, and the sacrifices needed to be made to achieve his dream. The price has been high, both for Yngwie himself and for those close to him.
Based on interviews, made both in Europe and in the U.S.A., with the people that were actually there, this book gives a unique and sensitive insight into the raging life of the guitar God. Everyone from teachers, classmates, music store owners, band members, road crew via managers, record companies and world renowned musicians to girlfriends and ex-wives share their personal stories and thoughts about the great Swede.
The interviewed include:
Joe Lynn Turner, Graham Bonnet, Tallee Savage, Jeff Scott Soto, Ron Keel, Mike Varney, Amber Dawn Landin, Peter Rooth, Göran Edman, the list goes on ...
No one could write this story better than Anders Tengner, by far the most celebrated music journalist in Sweden. Growing up in the same neighborhood as Yngwie and hanging out in with the same gangs, following Yngwies career as a journalist and friend both in Sweden and in the USA. Anders was also a guest at the first two of Yngwie's weddings.
Anders Tengner is a Swedish equivalent to Neil Strauss or Mick Wall.
Starting as a writer at music magazine Okej in the 1980’s, he soon got the opportunity to work with his own TV shows. If you didn’t know Anders, there was no way you were gonna sell your music in Sweden. Literally every rock star stopped for an interview, a friendly chat and a photo shoot. Credits also include magazines Kerrang! and Japanese Burrn.
Still today Anders keeps in contact with some of the icons, such as Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Kiss, to name a few.

A perfect companion to Yngwie's "Relentless".
By Angryman1522
Having already read and reviewed Relentless, I was quite pleased to see this book offered in English. One might look at it as a kind of rebuttal to Yngwie's book, but As Above, So Below was published prior to Yngwie's, and since Yngwie was allegedly aware of this book (having allegedly refused to participate), Relentless may have been his rebuttal to this. Either way, both books make for good reading, but I did enjoy reading the opinions and stories of those who worked, and lived, with Yngwie. Not surprisingly, much of it isn't very positive, so to speak. There is no doubt that Yngwie is eccentric, but what musical genius (and Yngwie IS just that) isn't? I've never understood why people chose to slam Yngwie for doing things "the Yngway": his albums have his name on them, so he lives and dies with the successes and failures that come from doing this HIS way. I have a great amount of respect for that, not just when it comes to Yngwie. I think a lot of the negative comments came from people who don't understand the concept of "followership" or being an employee. I don't think Yngwie ever led anyone to believe that they were equal members in his vision, though he certainly seems to have stiffed his employees on payday, more than once.
What gave this book the edge over Relentless, in my opinion, was that it was enjoyable to read from start to finish, and presented an unfiltered look at one of my teenage idols, a man whose music still brings me enjoyment and still inspires me to play guitar, now that I'm 40.
Funny enough, though I have never met or interacted with April Solmaz-Malmsteen, I came away from this book disliking her. She seems to be a domineering force in Yngwie's life, and while that certainly has many positive aspects (his health, fatherhood, etc), I think she managed to help destroy an already faltering career, more than some of Yngwie's past managers. After all, who wouldn't have wanted to hear an Yngwie album with Jorn Lande on vocals? I think that would have been phenomenal.
One of the things that makes this book a good read is that the author actually knows Yngwie and has since his early days. This allowed him access, I believe, to people that the average biographer would not have had access to. The result is more information for the reader, and if you're an avid Yngwie aficionado, you'll appreciate this.
The book is well written, though the order is sometimes far from chronological. It does often portray Yngwie in a negative light, but if this were a book written by the former head of his fanclub, it would have been pointless to read. I once wrote a review on Yngwie's website for one of his concerts on the fanclub's message board, and I got a very nasty e-mail from his fanclub because I dared to mention that Yngwie looked extremely unhealthy (this was during his Meatloaf stunt-double phase, which I think was the Facing The Animal tour). In any case, this was a fantastic read, and when it was over, I found myself wanting more. After all, when is less more? MORE IS MORE!

Shocking to say the least
By Sandra Banducci
I read "Relentless", and it was pretty sugar coated. I am a big fan of Yngwie's (even at my tender age of 65) and have followed his music since 1994.
Reading this book was a real shocker at any rate. It was well written, a little confusing at times, funny in places, sad in others.
It is too bad that the author could not interview his father, as that would have been very enlightening. I felt that much of his "wildness" was due to a lack of parental guidance by his mother in his early life. Some kids need more direction than others, and obviously his antics were a result of not really understanding "right from wrong". And while he didn't do anything early in his life that was major, I do believe the spousal abuse with certain women had a deep rooted emotion he had to deal with. It was tragic that he treated some women the way he did. His drinking shocked me as well. Gotta give him credit for playing with that much alcohol in his system.
I met Yngwie in 2005, aboard his bus when he performed in Concord, Ca, I had "won" a "meet and greet" through the fan club, and I was received very well by Yngwie and spent almost 20 minutes talking to him. We spoke about music, me a Stravinsky fan, and he more into the "romantic" period of classical. He was very cordial and polite.
After meeting him, I expressed my concerns about his physical condition to the fan club president, whom I had a strong friendship with and she later told me that he had a major incident that did change him and got him on the right track.. My concern is, why didn't his wife address this earlier if she was so "into" taking care of him, they had been together for at least 5-7 years by then. I know it doesn't happen over night, but Yngwie looked terrible when I met him. I also feel that April overworked him as well, tours are hard on artists, and obviously most of the people that worked with her didn't like her. Me as well, her handshake lacked substance, and the look she gave me was questionable.
By the way, I believe the Female Journalist mentioned in the book for writing his autobio was the fan club president, I know because I was allowed to read some manuscripts she worked on in 2007.. no mention of her in Relentless so I was a little ticked off at that. She recently passed away from cancer, I am not sure if Yngwie knows, as he never mentioned anything on his site. She was a wonderful person, and had quite a rich life even without running his club. Yngwie was fortunate to have her promote his artistry.
Thanks to the author and all those that contributed, it was a very enlightening insight into the Maestro's life!

Tales of a Viking
By Fender Bender
The story told in this book is a wild ride! The author, Anders Tengner, did a fantastic job gathering all the information that is presented here. In order to give a detailed picture of who Yngwie J. Malmsteen is, he tracked down and spoke to a large number of people who were all closely related to our favorite Swedish guitar wizard. All the episodes and stories told in this book are based on first hand information. The list of his interview partners is long and it includes too many names to mention here.
The intention of this book is in no way to badmouth or ridicule Malmsteen, it is a serious attempt to shed some light on the man who is bringing the world not only his own brand of neoclassical metal since the early 80s, but also a fair share of madness and mayhem. It uncovers the man behind the myth and tells the story in a chronological order starting from childhood days in Sweden all the way to the release of Malmsteen's latest album "Spellbound" in 2012.
The book is very well written and entertaining, once you start reading, you won't be able to stop.
As you might imagine, there is light but also darkness to be found in between the pages. There are hilarious moments that will make you laugh as well as episodes that will make you shake your head in disbelief.
If you want to know more about Malmsteen or about the way a "living guitar legend" lived his life in the heyday of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, this book is for you. But be warned...this tale is not for the faint of heart!
