It's actually a pretty good read.

You can tell that Eitzen is a Marxist. He approaches social problems as conflict theorist. The thing is that Eitzen doesn't tend offer actual solution, but I guess that up to our generation. All and all it's a good book easy to follow.

Old, But Still the Best

For my money, Richard Taylor's "Metaphysics" is still the best short introduction to metaphysics for undergraduates or general readers. Taylor had a unique gift for explaining "heavy" philosophical topics -- God, fatalism, mind, time, causality -- in readable prose that met analytical standards but never mired the reader in a bog of technicalities and linguistic distinctions. The chapters on God and fatalism, in particular, are near-classic essays that have been widely discussed in the secondary literature and reprinted in anthologies.

Taylor conveyed a sense of excitement about philosophy and taught readers that metaphysics is central to any thoughtful life. Maybe he got a bit carried away on this score -- to judge by a few statements in "Metaphysics," he took himself very seriously and believed that only philosophers can have meaningful lives. But these are minor annoyances and conceits in an otherwise outstanding book. There's a reason why it's gone through four editions and is still in print after more than 40 years! I've read the book three times and still find riches in it.

This is the text book for many college philosophy-knowledge and reality courses. A small book that one can read over a few times and think about the tough questions of epistemology and metaphysics. The mind-body relation(or lack thereof), freedom and determinism, fate, space and time,temporal passage,causation,God,and polarity, are among the topics touched upon. This is a book in which you must think as you read,and watch out for assumptions the author makes at points. Go for it.

Good Introduction to Philosophy

"Metaphysics" has been used in classrooms since the 1960s, and for good reason -- it is a clearly-written introduction to central metaphysical issues such as the mind/body problem, determinism and free will, and the existence of God (the chapter on God has been reprinted in numerous anthologies). Here and there, author Taylor gets carried away with the "heaviness" of his subject, as when he writes like Ecclesiastes, or succumbs to faux-Spinoza-isms about how "untutored and vulgar" people lead impoversished lives because they can't understand metaphysics. But otherwise the book is excellent. If you wanted to introduce a smart teenager or college freshman to philosophy, you couldn't do better than "Metaphysics."

About the Author
Alan Thorn is a London-based game developer, freelance programmer, and author with more than 13 years of industry experience. He founded the game studio Wax Lyrical Games in 2010 and is the creator of the award-winning game Baron Wittard: Nemesis of Ragnarok. He is the author of ten video training courses and thirteen books on game development, including Practical Game Development with Unity and Blender and UDK Game Development. Alan has worked freelance on more than 500 projects, including games, simulators, kiosks, serious games, and augmented reality software for game studios, museums, and theme parks worldwide. Game Development Principles is a definite must-read for both newcomers to the game development industry and experienced developers.

Game Development Principles is comprehensive, providing a big-picture look at workflows involved in game development as well as digging deep to illustrate in detail the stages of game development: Basic Design & Brainstorming, Prototyping, Refining Design, Engine Development, Asset Creation, Scripting, Testing and Debugging and Distribution and Marketing.

The author has a wealth of experience and is very careful to share very important tips and tricks he has gained through study and experience. The workflow suggestions and the tips in this book, if learned and practiced, will not only save a developer hours of time but the game produced will be tweaked for performance. In short, you can do it the hard way, by trial and error and tons of time, or, you can save time and follow the guidelines and workflows in Game Development Principles. The principles covered are foundational and cover all methods of development. Regardless of the game engine software you use, the book will save time and help you produce a robust game.

My game engine of choice is Unity 4. If you are just beginning game development, I highly suggest reading Game Development Principles cover to cover and then following up with Unity 4 Fundamentals by Alan Thorn. Reading, studying and applying the workflows in these two books will give you a very solid foundation and help you release a game of your own design.

Finally, Alan Thorn writes in a very comprehensive and thorough style; you get the feeling that he is talking with you, guiding you through the game development process. I highly recommend Game Development Principles; my copy is dog-eared and highlighted with tons of notes already - it will be a reference on my desk for a long time. Thanks!

Good read and eye opener

I am a true noob in he gaming industry. In fact I am no gamer and have not developed a single game either. This book has provided me an insight into the game design process more so in a graphic design and programmer point of view which I am more interested in.
I highly recommend this book to anyone about to venture into game development.

Must read

Mixed methodology is one of the best books which presents a wide range of thoughts and arguments concerning the two major research designs (Quans and Quals). The authors demonstrate philosophical underpinnings and practical procedures to be followed to design and implement "mixed methods" and "mixed model" designs. The book is a comprehensive text of how we can design research with respect to "research questions" as the main objective! However it seems obvious, that we should be doing so, the authors present the challenges and visions that make it inappropriate for many to think that way. This is a must read book for insightful researchers. I highly recommend it for all researchers and PhD students.

This book, along with John Creswell's "Research Design," cover everything you need to know about research design -- and at a brief 200 pages each.

If you are in graduate school, I guarantee you will get so much out of these books. Even if bought brand new, the combined $70 for both are more than worth the investment.
