An inner search for the meaning of life

I have often seen or heard this play reviewed as a comedy, a black comedy, yes, but a comedy. I do not see it that way at all. Aside from the witty comments made by some of the characters. Of course maybe the comedy comes in the delivery of the lines. It seems to me that it is a deep search for Eddie from the beginning. It is near Dadaism or Existensialism; he is thouroughly disgusted with the world, women, and even his friends much of the time. The Dramatic question seems to be What will Eddie find? I enjoyed the search with him and liked the play very much.

About the Author
Franklin CampbellJones is associate professor of education leadership at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. He completed six years as a tenured faculty member of education leadership at California State University, Los Angeles. He is a national and international facilitator of organization learning and diversity. His 30-year service in education includes tenure as a high school social science teacher, school administrator, and project director for the State of California.

Brenda CampbellJones, Ph.D, CEO She provides professional development, and technical assistance to school districts throughout the United States. Dr. CampbellJones gives keynote address internationally and nationally on culturally responsiveness in diverse communities. Dr. CampbellJones is published in scholarly and professional journals. She has served as principal of an award winning middle school, teacher, state and national staff development facilitator.

Randall B. Lindsey is emeritus professor at California State University, Los Angeles and has a practice centered on educational consulting and issues related to equity and access. Prior to higher education faculty roles, he served as a junior and senior high school history teacher, a district office administrator for school desegregation, and executive director of a non-profit corporation. All of his experiences have been in working with diverse populations and his area of study is the behavior of white people in multicultural settings. It is his belief and experience that too often white people are observers of multicultural issues rather than personally involved with them. He works with colleagues to design and implement programs for and with schools, law enforcement agencies, and community-based organizations to provide access and achievement. He and his wife and frequent co-author, Delores, are enjoying this phase of life as grandparents, as educators, and in support of just causes that extend the promises of democracy throughout society in authentic ways.

Progressive propaganda indoctrinating American students

This is a brazen piece of progressive/communist/socialist propaganda that has infiltrated into too many American school curriculums. Every single parent in America should examine this book closely and be prepared to fight the school board to remove this piece of garbage. You'd be much better off reading "Witness" by Whittaker Chambers to your kids at night.

This book is nothing more than political propaganda. This type of thinking is dangerous and will end up causing a race war if nothing else. Also parents be aware schools in Omaha have made this crap required reading.

The Cultural Proficiency Journey

This book is nothing more than a progressive's journey to power. Its socialistic dribble espousing redistribution of wealth from "whites" to everybody else is disguised by the author's attempt to raise cultural awareness among teachers. Teachers have had cultural competency training for the better part of 20 years and ethnic sensitivity training as far back as the early 70's when Affirmative Action was implemented. This book is a politicized piece of indoctrination and propaganda that does not belong in any school district. Shouldn't we be using tax dollars to train teachers in academic proficiency?? Wouldn't those dollars be better spent to educate our youth to be proficient in math, reading, history and other core subjects. Shame on the progressive authors of this piece of crap. Don't buy this book. And if your school district does, get yourself out to the school board meetings pronto!!

YA-- Like Dan Davis in Heinlein's Door into Summer (Ballantine, 1986), Lunzie Mespil is a victim of cryogenic sleep and future shock. On three separate occasions following a deep-space disaster, she is placed in suspended animation totaling almost 90 years while awaiting rescue. Like Ripley in the film Aliens , she has lost not just her friends and loved ones, but everything familiar to her. Her story is a study of struggle against adversity as she tries to put her life back together. Because her medical knowledge is obsolete, Lunzie returns to school and becomes the medical officer on an exploratory vessel for the Federation of Sentient Planets. While routinely surveying the prehistoric life of the planet Ireta, she is caught in the middle of a violent racial mutiny. While not as strong a book as The Ship Who Sang (Ballantine, 1976) or most of the "Pern" novels, McCaffrey has created a feisty, likable character in Lunzie Mespil. This well-written yarn can stand alone, but it works best if read with Dinosaur Planet (1978), Dinosaur Planet Survivors (1984, both Ballantine), and Sassinak (Baen, 1990). --John Lawson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

I enjoyed it.

Other reviewers may not have liked this book, but Mom & I both enjoyed it. Great concept, and it leaves things open for GENERATION WARRIORS to continue the story. Lunzie's frustration over being in cold sleep so often adds to the story tension, leading the reader to wonder not only if she will succeed or fail in what she does, but if she'll find herself in cold sleep again, and have to re-certify herself as a doctor -- again. Deals with issues that most authors may have forgotten about, such as having to get updated in technological and medical advances that occurred while she was asleep, and the whole issue of back pay.

Lamest . . . Plot . . . Ever (Warning, review contains spoilers!)

The only reason I can find for anybody finishing this book is if they promised somebody they would. Why do I say that? Because the story, as told, makes absolutely NO sense.

Lunzie, our heroine goes off to make money so she can return for her daughter and emigrate from Earth. Her ship has an accident, and she spends sixty years in cold sleep. After her lifepod is picked up, she then spends the next two years desperately trying to find and contact her daughter. She succeeds and makes arrangements to meet her daughter on Earth. To get there, she signs on as a doctor on a luxury cruise liner. The liner has a disaster.(Think _Titanic_) Many passengers and crew escape and are rescued, but Lunzie gets another ten years in cold sleep awaiting help. After she's revived (again) she finally reaches Earth, only to find a tearful "Why did you change your mind?" message from her daughter. At that point, the book completely melted down.

1. Lunzie was CREW on the liner. If some escaped and others didn't, did the words "missing and presumed dead" never occur to anybody, either the characters OR the authors?

2. Daughter is almost certainly alive at age eighty-five, in an era of 120-year-plus lifespans. Lunzie makes absolutely NO further effort to contact her daughter or even find out where she is.

This makes, as I said, NO sense.

A friend of mine once, when asked what he thought of Anne McCaffrey as a writer, told me he avoided her books because they were so violent. When I asked him, in disbelief, why he said that, he replied: "Because she does so much violence to logic and common sense."

I now know *EXACTLY* how he felt, and why. Avoid this one at all costs.

Where's the sequel?

This book suffers from the ills of collaborative efforts. Although I don't know any of the details of the arrangement between McCaffrey and Nye, I'd guess that Nye wrote the book based on McCaffrey's concept.
Half way through the book I began to wonder if this was going to be another of those multi-volume stories where seeds planted in the first book bear fruit but are never answered six or ten books later.
If intended to be a one volume book, as another review has pointed out, this one has no ending. Nothing gets resolved; very little is learned; the main character has not changed in any remarkable way; and the story is not over.

About the Author
Bernice L. Hausman is Professor of English at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she also teaches for the Women's Studies Program. She is the author of Changing Sex: Transsexualism, Technology, and the Idea of Gender and writes about medicine, gender theory, and the body. She lives in Blacksburg, VA.

Exellent book!

A must-read for any woman. Hausman's book is thorough and fascinating. A great read, and a great look at breastfeeding from a cultural perspective.

A little thick with the analysis, but worth digging through

Textual analysis (not necessarily applied to what we immediately think of as texts) can be tough going at times, but Hausman is worth doing a little extra work to get through. Early on, she mentions how common in her experience it had been to meet women who identified as feminists, who had had children and breastfed them, and who had vigourously ambivalent feelings about La Leche League. Since what I read about LLL caused me to steer completely clear of them (and, to be fair, I have equal disgust for second wave feminism's attitude to breastfeeding in particular, and parenting in general), this book was a fascinating window into a world I had not had the courage to explore directly.

I have benefitted greatly from the work of LLL. I have a lot of friends who breastfed, in part, because of their activism, and those friends were my support. And I've benefitted hugely from second wave feminism. Nice to see someone doing the hard work of reconciling these two, and showing some possibilities for a path forward to a better world for the children who are yet to be born.
