startling stories

While searching for texts for a class I teach called International Short Stories, I came across and ordered this book, along with two others, on the basis of stories and writers in this book I knew I wanted to use. I got far more than I expected. This book is proof that an editor can make an incredible difference. Rather than select obvious stories, ones continually anthologized, John Loughery has chosen stories for their ability to startle a reader with subject matter, approach, and excellence of writing. I found stories here which left me refreshed simply because they were the stories I hoped were out there. Beautiful story-telling, challenging ideas, brightness everywhere. I would recommend this book to any reader, but would especially draw the attention of teachers of courses like International Short Story, or general fiction appreciation courses. It doesn't leave you complacent.

This is such a great book. I like the fact that she takes the songwriting process and breaks it down into manageable steps so that I keep moving forward with my writing! A 'must have' for any songwriter

Tough to rate, depends a little on what you are looking for.

I'm delving into songwriting and came across this and another book of hers after discovering her youtube videos (which I found entertaining and informative). My goal was to have a better understanding of the process of writing so I wasn't aimless. I don't feel that this helped me much I've read about 5 books now, and can honestly say that I can't remember one tip that I've personally used from either book (the other book was 'study the hits', which I don't even remember - suggesting that I didn't take anything from it.)

Now, that said... there are some people for whom the book will be much more useful. One of my downfalls is that my music theory is weak and I have no ability to analyze and pick apart songs in a technical manner. So If she says to deconstruct a favorite and try to copy it and then gradually individualize it until it is something new, I can't do that at this time. If, you can there were some things relating to that. She also had some tips regarding the navigating and dealing with things in the industry. That's not a goal of mine, but if it is for you, again it may be a more useful book for you. But for the complete newb like myself, I just didn't gather much - I haven't gotten to rating them yet, but found guitar scales in context and how to write songs on the guitar to be much more useful books for me.
