Good basic algebra review

I bought this book for a middle school child (8th grade) and decided to do some reviewing as well. I found Algebra Know-It-All to be straight forward and simple to understand. I liked the fact that concepts were introduced, built upon, and then added into the overall material. I was also glad to see that the text was conversational and began simply without giving the feeling that the student was being dropped into the deep end of the pool from the start. I especially like the author's encouraging words to the student throughout the book. Definitely worth the money.

Fantastic reference

This is great for brushing up on algebra, I bought it for my 13 year old, but I've been reading it as well as I work through the chapters with him.

I particularly enjoyed the opening chapters on number and set theory.

The narrative is explanatory, not didactic, and the problems are actually thought provoking and challenging, not just the typical "solve 31 random math problems" approach. The "here's a challenge!" sections are actually challenging and educational, they really make you think about the subject matter, not just memorizing rules and applying them to a series of problems.

Stan takes the same approach to education that Sal Khan does on khanacademy - education and explanation, not rote memorization. The ability to do this in book form, rather than interactive video, is impressive.

There is a 1 star review on here that discusses an error in the order of operations section. Regarding that review:
1) All books have errata, the proper response is to point the error out and help get it corrected. Posting a public 1 star review for discovering a single error in a math book strikes me as being a knee-jerk reaction, and without merit.
2) The version of the book that I have doesn't even contain that error any more, so clearly the author and publisher took the issue seriously and got it corrected quickly.

While it has been a few years since that review was written, I do think it would be appropriate for the reviewer to update the rating, since (even in the version containing the error) the book clearly doesn't deserve a single star. At this point, that negative review speaks more clearly about the reviewer than it does the book.

I sincerely hope that the math teacher who wrote that review doesn't bring a similar level of over-reaction into the classroom.

Excellent Course or Reference Book!

I bought this book for my 13yr old son who is taking his first course in Algebra this 09-10 school yr. This book is excellent for shy students who do not want to call a lot of attention to themselves in class. No matter what the teacher is teaching about Algebra, there is usually a better explanation in Stan's book.

I have been buying Stan's books for over 15 years, on many different technical subjects. I have never been disappointed! His books are always a great buy for the present and future reference!

I wish I have had this dictionary growing up and learning English. I wish they would make it available online because it is a bit on the pricey side. I have been reading it like a novel and enjoy the various nuances of words and how each is employed uniquely in its own context. By all means, buy this dictionary!

Watching Light Bounce

I was looking for information on how light is reflected by different shapes and surfaces. "Introduction to nonimaging optics" by Julio Chaves provided all that and more as an up-to-date compendium of the most authoritative research in this relatively new/emerging field.

This book provides an exhaustive theoretical exploration of "nonimaging" systems (ie. where there is no object image formed, but there is merely a source of light, an optic to bounce around the light, and a receiver.)

It is difficult to visualize how invisible light bounces around differently configured systems. The book does a remarkably good job depicting many examples of how this happens. The book uses many nicely drawn diagrams and visualizations.

The first section of the book is described as covering main concepts and designs. This is relatively easy reading at a level of high school or entry-level college physics. The second section of the book delves deeper into rays, waves and the appearance of integrals and equations is evident. The second section of the book is a challenging read as it takes the reader well beyond an introduction.

For me, it would be of great practical benefit to see more real world images as well - perhaps photos of systems utilizing these techniques.

I was looking to use mirrors for reflecting and concentrating light in solar energy systems. For my interests, this book provided answers and invaluable assistance in seeing how light bounces around optic systems.

Good enough. Worth having

This review pertains to the book with artwork by Rachel Isadora only. ISBN: 0-399-21336-8. For some reason, Amazon continues to publish this review under the wrong book, one that does not feature artwork by Rachel Isadora, even though I pointed this out to them.
This book is a verbatim retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale. The story is not embellished or changed in any way. The tale is illustrated with "luminous paintings, capturing the mood of a snowy Victorian winter..." (from the book jacket blurb).
Since the tale is only one and a half pages long, that makes for a slim book. The odd pages feature a paragraph of text , about three sentences, while the even pages feature a painting illustrating the text. About 13 paintings.
The book is hardcovered with two additional paintings, and you get a paper book cover mirroring those two paintings and the bonus blurb.
I can't see reading this story to a child. It's just too dismal. You can't read it without crying. It's an adult topic and an adult treatment. The powerful story is designed to make an adult think and reexamine his behaviour.
I rated the paintings with only three stars because they're good enough, but did not blow me away. The cover painting that you see here on the web site is a good example of the quality and style of the paintings.

For anyone who loves the sea, this is a treasure trove. It was printed in 1961 by the United States Naval Institute at Annapolis and includes a foreword by Chester W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, U.S. Navy. The author, Carl C. Cutler, focused on the American sailing packet ships, the businessmen who received them, captain and seamen. It also addresses first steps to making sea travel comfortable, which was extremely important given the movement of people from around the world to the America's during the 1800s. That was the greatest period of migration in the history of the world, and much of it was due to the vessels and captains discussed herein. It has been a main research tool for my Maritime Heritage Project: www.MaritimeHeritage.org. The author and publisher also publishd "Greyhounds of the Sea," an exquisite look at the elegant and fast clipperships.
