Bernice L. Hausman is Professor of English at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she also teaches for the Women's Studies Program. She is the author of Changing Sex: Transsexualism, Technology, and the Idea of Gender and writes about medicine, gender theory, and the body. She lives in Blacksburg, VA.

Exellent book!

A must-read for any woman. Hausman's book is thorough and fascinating. A great read, and a great look at breastfeeding from a cultural perspective.

A little thick with the analysis, but worth digging through

Textual analysis (not necessarily applied to what we immediately think of as texts) can be tough going at times, but Hausman is worth doing a little extra work to get through. Early on, she mentions how common in her experience it had been to meet women who identified as feminists, who had had children and breastfed them, and who had vigourously ambivalent feelings about La Leche League. Since what I read about LLL caused me to steer completely clear of them (and, to be fair, I have equal disgust for second wave feminism's attitude to breastfeeding in particular, and parenting in general), this book was a fascinating window into a world I had not had the courage to explore directly.

I have benefitted greatly from the work of LLL. I have a lot of friends who breastfed, in part, because of their activism, and those friends were my support. And I've benefitted hugely from second wave feminism. Nice to see someone doing the hard work of reconciling these two, and showing some possibilities for a path forward to a better world for the children who are yet to be born.

Dowling starts us down the garden path with Creating Mind, a lucid introduction to the study of the brain. A Harvard researcher and instructor, Dowling puts his experience to good use in describing the mechanisms underlying memory, vision, language, and many other more-or-less well-understood phenomena. We learn that the cells and chemicals that make up our brains have been studied extensively, yet we are still mystified by the simplest fact of all: we are conscious. "I think, therefore I am" doesn't do justice to the richness of our experience, and Creating Mind tries to go further by exploring how the convergence of language, learning, and sensation might produce awareness. The many illustrations are clear and work well with the text to explain points best understood visually. (After seeing the studies of the humble squid, you'll never look at calamari the same way again!) In this compact volume, Dowling, a Harvard biologist specializing in vision, explains how the human brain is structured, how it processes and stores information and how it occasionally malfunctions, while discussing its evolutionary roots. Topics as diverse as developmental biology, mental illness, the aging process, the biochemical basis of emotions, spinal cord injuries and the nature of optical illusions are touched upon, as are a range of current and projected treatments for disorders of the nervous system. Although Dowling's didactic style of posing questions to be answered wears a bit thin, a good deal of information is presented in a form largely accessible to the lay reader. While perhaps not surprising given his specialty, Dowling spends a disproportionate amount of time on the intricacies of the visual system while largely ignoring the other senses. Also omitted is any discussion of recent work examining structural differences in the brain between the sexes as well as correlational research suggesting possible links between brain configuration and homosexuality. Nonetheless, Dowling provides a competent introduction to the quickly developing field of neuroscience. Photos and line drawings throughout.

A great book

This is simply the best introduction to neuroscience I have read that is written for non-science students. The book is short, but it covers virtually all aspects of neuroscience, from events taking place in individual synapses to how various regions of the brain contribute to memory, emotion and consciousness. Being a neuroscientist myself, I am fully aware of the complexity of this field. Yet, Professor Dowling is able to explain complex concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. For instance, many students may still have trouble understanding how a neuron's resting potential is formed, or how an action potential is generated, even after taking a whole course in neurophysiology. Yet, all of this is explained lucidly, concisely and accurately in one short chapter in this book, which in my opinion is a tour de force. The second half, which surveys the functions of different brains regions, is especially fascinating. My wish is that Dowling will soon write a new edition of another masterpiece of his, "The Retina-An Approachable Part of the Brain", which is starting to get outdated (it was published in 1987).
On the other hand, if you are a science student, the best introductory text is probably "The Neuron: Cell and Molecular Biology" by Levitan and Kaczmarek. Dowling's "Neurons and Networks" is also good, but I find it to be somewhat wordy.

The best overview of neuroscience that I have encountered.

I cannot empasize enough how useful John E. Dowling's Creating Mind is for a comprehensive understanding of the nervous system and how it works. I am a high school freshman and did not have access to any neuroscience courses, but was extremely interested in the field. After reading highly technical writing like the AP Biology textbook and unfocused popular science books like Steven Pinker's How the Mind Works, I did not have comprehensive understanding of the brain. John E. Dowling's Creating Mind was a godsend.
The book is concise and extremely easy to read, and most importantly is organized in a way that makes sense. Right off the bat, Dowling explains the book's structure. With the first five chapters providing essential background knowledge that other books seem to omit, and the following five chapters describing the human brain. At the beginning of each chapter there are short excerpts from memoirs or case studies that reveal the effects of what Dowling consequently discusses. He describes the molecular processes that take place within minute neurons, but at the same time brings it all together with a lucid overview of how the brain works. Dowling also acknowledges the limitations of our understanding, and offers a glimpse of the future of neuroscience.
Creating Mind is about 190 pages of writing and includes a glossary and an extremely useful Further Reading list. The book is fairly short (I read it in two days), but when you finish reading it, you feel like you know all that a Ph.D knows but without the scientific jargon. If I ever meet Dr. Dowling I will thank him for this incredible piece of work. I sincerely loved this book, as it gave me my first clear understanding of the brain, and although it may not be technical enough for the medical student, Creating Mind is the best introduction to neuroscience for the curious lay reader. I highly recommend it.

This book is fantastic. All you need is basic school science to understand this clear and facinating explanation of how our grey matter functions. If the idea of understanding the human brain fascinates you but you think you'd never begin to understand.....read this book. It's not only easily understood, it's an interesting read as well. Highly recommended!

I have enjoyed reading this book. Though initially I felt that the model suggested is complex but when I started relating the analogy to the way it can be deployed in my organization, everything started making a perfect sense. I will recommend this to the fellow professionals like me.

About the Author

After graduating with a degree in Economics and MSc from the London School of Economics, Kevin Boakes started his working life on the bond trading desk at Greenwell Montagu Gilt-edged, which is now part of HSBC Investment Bank. As their Chief UK Economist he was responsible for giving on the spot advice to bond traders as soon as economic stories hit the news screens. He has regularly contributed articles to newspapers including the Times, Observer and Guardian and appeared on the BBC’s Money Programme and the Financial World Tonight. In the late 1980s he decided to make a radical career change and left the City to join Kingston University, initially in the Economics Department, and then at Kingston Business School where he is currently a Senior Lecturer in the School of Accounting and Finance. He teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Finance and International Financial Markets. In addition to his academic work he has run numerous economics and financial training courses for various Investment Banks.

A sparkling, dramatic series

This series combines the glitz and glam of Gossip Girl and the intrigue of the past to create a wholly entertaining and absorbing new series!

The Luxe

The Luxe, written by Anna Godbersen, is in a class of its own. Unlike all of the rich girl novels floating around out there, The Luxe takes place in 1899. But don't think that these girls are as mild mannered as their time period would suggest. Penelope Hayes would do anything in order to marry Henry Schoonmaker. Her best friend Elizabeth Holland would rather not marry anyone in her class at all. But when circumstances beyond these girls' control puts them at odds with each other, situations tense. Throw in a bitter maid and a nosy younger sister, and things go from tense to deadly, and someone might not live to see the next season.

Nothing like any of the novels today that feature the upper class, The Luxe is one delicious read that nearly any girl will love. Full of a vivid cast of characters that you just have to love of hate, The Luxe is a captivating and luxurious delight. It is evident that Godbersen's writing is well researched through the carefully detailed aspects of everyday life that rather than come off as tedious, shines through interesting and gives the novel depth. Kept lively by alternating points of view, The Luxe is a perfect combination of Ann Rinaldi and Gossip Girl. You'll think you have it figured out by page fifty, but the plot's mysterious and secretive twists will leave readers eagerly anticipating a sequel.

Rumors

Manhattan has never before had more juicy gossip to spread ever since Elizabeth Holland's mysterious "demise". But as the New Year approaches, rumors fly and the Holland family is bombarded with endless questions...and endless bills. Diana Holland finds her own way of making money, and she and Henry Schoonmaker fall in love. But Penelope Hayes is determined to make Henry hers--no matter what the cost. Elizabeth is living blissfully out West with Will, but then a panicked note from her sister brings her rushing back to the city. And in between it all is a former maid who has the inside sources and ambition that will threaten them all.

Fast paced, elegant, and full of intrigue, Rumors proves to be much more engrossing and complicated than its prequel. Penelope becomes the villain that you come to feel sorry for, Henry the man with surprising depth, Diana the unlikely and lovable heroine, and Lina the dreaming girl you have to pity and admire.

Moving beyond the standard plotlines that dominated The Luxe, Godbersen weaves an intricate and convoluted story via the many colorful and wonderfully unique characters that builds and builds until it takes on a life of its own. In this glittery, elusive and sly world seeping with secrets, things aren't always as they seem, a secret told is worth a tidy sum, but a secret kept is worth more, and you should never underestimate the power of money and reputation. Godbersen builds suspense until the very end, giving us both a happy and unhappy ending, and leaves readers wrapped around her little finger, begging for more.

Envy

Picking up just two months where Rumors left off, Envy continues with the inexplicably engrossing story of New York City's finest society girls and their secrets and scandals. Elizabeth Holland is still mourning the death of her husband, Will Keller, and is doing the best to pick up her life. The new Mrs. Schoonmaker, formerly Penelope Hayes and formerly Elizabeth's best friend, isn't making life easy for either Holland sister. Penelope insists on carrying on the charade of Elizabeth being her best friend, and knows that Diana Holland and her husband Henry are in love, and will do anything to keep them apart. Amidst them all is Carolina Broad, who is determined to continue with her recently elevated lifestyle, no matter what. The dreary winter months are filled with secrets and scandals, love and greed, proposals and farewells...

Godbersen has crafted the perfect guilty-pleasure series for teens. Envy is even more jam-packed with all of the scintillating gossip and drama that its prequels are well known for. Godbersen keeps the book moving at a good clip by rotating the points of view among her characters, which does well in keeping the reader's attention. She also departs from a familiar setting and takes her characters to Palm Beach, Florida, a nice change in scenery that keeps the series fresh, and offers a bit of an educational look at another aspect of the lifestyle of the rich. Towards the end of the novel, readers will be gratified to see that a few characters develop a backbone and an admirable sense of honor, which certainly spices up the storyline, leave readers wondering what on earth the author has up her sleeve. Godbersen is proving herself a bold and fearless writer, and continues the tradition of leaving readers hanging in an ending that is both exciting and exceedingly frustrating, but will ensure that readers will keep coming back.

For people who love the thought of having tea in the afternoon with a pretty dress on and play hard to get with the men who would like your hand... then this is a great story for you! I am a huge romantic and this story has many romatic story lines in it! If you love to read, and you love romance without all the dirty story lines, then buy these books!
