Superb book on polyhedral origami

This book is easy to follow with simple, clearly stated directions for building polyhedron models ranging from simple to complex. The instructions nicely couple easy-to-read diagrams with large, colorful images of the finished products that help me to visualize my end products as I fold.

I am currently working my way through all of the models in this book, and I am really enjoying the gradual way that Tomoko Fuse introduces new models. She groups obvious types together in the book's sections, and methodically explains (by text, diagram and picture) each unit from simple to complex variation. Instructions include the type/name of the structure, level of difficulty, size of the paper needed, number of each type of paper unit required, a three-dimensional diagram of the polyhedral structure (for more complex structures) and assembly diagrams that show how the pieces fit together. All of the instructional images are in color so it is easy to differentiate between front and back of each paper unit, and to tell the difference between units in the assembly diagrams.

This book presents reusable paper unit types that are creatively put to use in the models in a number of different ways. For instance, I like the way I can create colorful joints that add to the overall presentation of each piece. I especially like the "Various Methods of Assembling Double-Sided Hexagonal Rings" section where Fuse explains how to take the traditional polyhedral structures she has taught and extend their shapes creatively in order make new designs. In general, there are enough variations of each type in all sections that I do not feel like I am working through the drudgery of the same projects over and over as I have with some other books.

Overall, this is an excellent addition to the library of anyone interested in exploring polyhedron models with origami.

Great Photos

This is a beautifully presented book with wonderful models and photos. But a lot of the units are repeats if you already own Fuse's all time best book Unit Origami - Multidimensional Transforms. About a third of the book is materials from her Unit Origami book. Additionally there are a few beautiful dodecahedra and several other units. Overall it is a must-have if you are a modular origami lover.

Extraordinary

Really, I believe this is one of Tomoko Fuse best books I've ever seen. Great pictures fully and well explained, English is not my native language but it results pretty easy to understand it.

The book's design is so cool, I just can't wait to do any of the projects inside... I encourage every one who like Origami to buy it.

Even, each project it's labeled with a difficulty level category starting at one star to three stars. But all the proyects are so well explained that if you have a little folding experience you will find easy to build them.

Braude explores America's spiritualist movement in the context of 19th-century social, denominational, and political history. Spiritualism claimed, through contact with the dead, to be a scientific investigation into the immortality of the soul. The movement was associated with free speech and the abolition of slavery. Because it maintained that divine truth was accessible to any individual, female or male, and thus was accessible outside the male hierarchies of family, church, and politics, it became associated with feminism as well; many early women leaders in all three movements were also spiritualists. A fascinating, well-researched, and scholarly work on a peripheral aspect of the rise of the American feminist movement.

Nineteenth Century Religion and Activism in the Making

The nineteenth century was the most radical and revolutionary period for women in American society. Ann Braude's RADICAL SPIRITS: SPRITUALISM AND WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY AMERICA examines the development and progression of women's rights as it pertained to religion and spirituality; when combined, they provided women the pulpit and the voice to participate in a society where they had been previoulsy confined to duties in the home. Indeed, women and feminism emerged from the churches and beckoned to the calls from women seeking an outlet to be emancipated from both a hierarchical church environment and a patriarchal home environment.

RADICAL SPIRITS attempts and succeeds at relating religion and women's history within the context of American history. The most unique aspect of this scholarship is the inclusion of the subject matter of religion and spiritual mediums. Mediums had an enormous effect on women's suffrage, and escalated and accounted for women's leadership in the community. Despite the fact that the most notable leaders of women's rights, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton did not necessarily participate in such activities, Braude takes into account those closely related to them: Anna Blackwell, Sarah Anthony Burtis, Mary Ann and Thomas Mclintock, and Lucretia Mott's dinner guests, a way to suggest that religion played a significant role in encouraging activism (xxi). RADICAL SPIRITS acknowledges religion and spiritualism in women's activities, and helps to present a better understanding of what shaped and molded women's rights in the United States during the nineteenth century.

Women Think They're Radical Today?!

I first met this book in a seminar about Spiritualist history, and was most impressed by the research and breadth of the coverage. I was also startled by the involvement of the Spiritualist movement in all the major reform movements of the 19th century. Change was happening everywhere in the lives of women! Dress reform, marriage reform, divorce reform to mention a few. Also the involvement of major figures working in the suffrage movement, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. In the mid-nineteenth century, women became the leaders on the Spiritualist platform, as mediums. They brought through the messages and information. From being in charge on the platform, they went into other areas where they were dominated by men and began to take more control. This book is the story of that tremendous period on change that has landed women where they are today. Today's women stand on the shoulders of those courageous women of the 19th century. Some one said to me,"If today's women were as radical as those women were, they would be chaining themselves to trees!" Enjoy!

The Centurion has seen extensive combat in the Korean War (Britain), Vietnam (Australia), the Middle East (Israel) in the 1967 Six Day War, 1973 Yom Kippur War, and during the 1978 and 1982 invasions of Lebanon, and in the Indo-Pakistan War (India) in 1965 where it fought against US-supplied M47 and M48 Patton tanks.

Simon Dunstan is an author, filmmaker and photographer who has written more than 50 books on military history, in particular on the Second World War and Vietnam. He has also written and directed a number of military history documentaries for the History Channel. He is the author of The Centurion (Modern Combat Vehicles: 2, Ian Allan, 1980) and Centurion vs T-55 (Osprey, 2009). He lives in London.

Christopher West ha escrito un libro profundamente basada en las enseñanzas católicas acerca de la moralidad sexual, especialmente influenciado por las enseñanzas del Papa Juan Pablo 2 llamadas la Teología del Cuerpo.

MUCHAS GRACIAS A CHRISTOPHER WEST por interpretar estas maravillosas enseñanzas para que quien sea pueda entenderlas y ser renovado de la mentalidad y el corazón. Si alguién ha tratado de simplemente recoger y leer alguna escritura del Papa, entonces sabe que no es muy fácil entenderlo. Pero Christopher ayuda a resolver ese problema.

Knight’s success as a college basketball coach is unquestioned. He was college basketball’s Coach of the Year five times and won three NCAA championships. He’s currently a basketball analyst for ESPN. Knight’s success was built on preparation. Recognizing that offensive success could be fleeting, he always emphasized defense, which he describes as making the appropriate response to the negativity one can encounter on offense. So negative thinking about offense leads one to focus, as coaches and players, on defense. See? It’s a conceit that lends itself more to a catchy title than an application in sports, life, or business. Embrace Negative Thinking

I have never been a basketball fan, so I went into reading The Power of Negative Thinking wondering if I would "get it." I knew who Bob Knight was (even as a non-basketball fan, how could you not?), but had no idea what to expect. I'm happy to report one need not be a basketball fan to thoroughly enjoy this lively, accessible, conversational-style look at the power of overcoming positivity with negative thinking.

There has been a backlash over the cult of positive thinking over the last few years, and with good reasons. Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America is one of the first books I read on the subject. And over the years, a great deal of research has come out warning about the dangers of unfettered optimism. But usually, optimists dismiss discussion of negative thinking as being depressing, pessimistic, or just giving up.

Knight starts his book with a very simple premise that overcomes this objection. Negative thinking is not about giving up or being a pessimist. Instead, it is about NEGATING everything that can get in the way of victory. Winning isn't about who wants it more. Winning is about who is most prepared. And being prepared is about honestly assessing strength, weaknesses, and developing a plan that negates mistakes and anything else that can get in the way. Or, as he sums it up:

"Having the will to win is not enough. Everyone has that. What matters is having the will to prepare to win."

Another point Knight makes is to not push people to do what they can't do, but push them to do what they can. It seems so logical, and yet we ignore this every day:

"My list of hollow platitudes includes the idea that You Can Do Anything You Really Want to Do. The truth is you can't. Chalk it up to the Divine Being's grand plan for making the whole world work because of interdependence, but the fact is each of us has more things that we cannot do well than we can. That's why society has doctors and plumbers and electricians and mechanics and every other Craiglist specialist."

The point is that whether you are pushing yourself, or running a team, you need to have a clear understanding not only of your strengths, but also an honest assessment of your weaknesses. The inability to do something is not a character flaw (as is not-so-subtly implied when you are told "If you really want to do it, you can"). The Negative Thinker recognizes the strengths and weaknesses in his team and, instead of pushing people to do what they can't do, pushes them to do what they can to best take advantage of their talents.

There is a lot of great information in this book of particular value to anyone in a leadership position, whether that is a sports coach or a business owner. In particular, when he discusses setting maximum, but realistic, expectations for those who answer to you. People will, in general, work to whatever level you will tolerate. Don't tolerate less than maximum results. But at the same time, make sure those expectations are based on the real abilities of the person and not an arbitrary, unreachable goal. He offers great examples from his own coaching experiences on how to work toward this.

I have two minor gripes with the book. First, at times Knight gets a little too conversational. He'll be on a discussion point, and then switch over to an odd little anecdote that bears little resemblance to the point he was making. Second, there are a lot of unnecessary filler quotes thrown at the end of each chapter which are just random adages and clichés. In fact, half of Chapter 11 is nothing but clichés and adages. It felt like they were trying to fluff up the word count. (My copy appears to be double spaced, but this may be because it is an advanced review copy and the final version may have more normal spacing between the sentences).

Overall, The Power of Negative Thinking is a fantastic look into the thought processes and work ethic of a man who knows that it takes more that Happy Fluffy Thoughts to win.

Necessary reading for today's pro coaches

Positive thinking is really important in sports. Athletes do best when they are confident in their skills. That being said, confrontation is important. Working to improve weaknesses is important. Realizing how to maximize strengths and minimize/strengthen weak areas is a key to success.

When Professional athletes that have been deluged with positive thinking reinforcement then become coaches, the fear of disrupting confidence and chemistry in the room is so imbedded that it can restrict the need to address and minimize athletes limitiations. Bobby Knight's book addresses this.

Toes in the Sand - A real testament of Faith

Toes in the Sand is a true testament of how one woman gave it all to God and took the leap of faith to make her dreams come true. Nena clearly illustrates on a real level throughout Toes in the Sand that we can all be happy by putting our faith in God and letting Him give us signs along the way on how to obtain our dreams. If you are in a place in your life where you are facing a small change, a big change or you are just looking for a change - read this book. You will be encouraged and inspired. Nena tells her story on such a personal level that you feel like you have known her your whole life. I could relate to Nena. She shares with us her journey of loss of a loved one, loss of jobs, kids leaving for college and the decision that changed her life and brought her more happiness than she ever imagined. If you have ever doubted your faith - you will learn from reading Toes in the Sand that faith is truly unwavering.

The teacher appears, when the student is ready

Toes in the Sand is a great personal story which I truly enjoyed. Nena's story has many lessons in it, and is an honest accounting of her own. I appreciated her candid introspection of how she had been successful in her career, had a great family, and had a relationship with God; it was when she came to a point in her life when she consciously chose to take God up on a standing offer to give Him MORE control of her life, that she became more fulfilled and was successful on a whole new level. This was an uplifting, powerful story. I felt much better having read it, and started to look for more ways where I could surrender my own control and ask God to help navigate my life more. I'd encourage anyone who is looking for a deeper relationship with God to read this book and learn how Nena did it. Great book!

Toes in the Sand
Nena takes you on her journey over many months of challenges until she arrives in a place she had always dreamed of living. How she makes it to her dream will have you reading on and on and then celebrating with her.She makes us feel like we are there with her facing these challenges alongside of her and admiring her coping skills by staying positive. In the end, these feelings prove to be beneficial as they bring her and her family to a place where they want to be.
This is the book to read this year and recommend to others as it illustrates how to endure when faced with challenges. Her book will inspire you to live your dreams and have unwavering faith.
Quote from the end book; "Everyone's dreams are unique which is what makes our world so beautiful. My hope is that everyone has faith in God to fulfill these dreams so we can all live our lives full of abundance and happiness."

A CLASSIC, beautiful story of a time and people long gone

I first read "Hanta Yo" more than 20 years ago and recently re-bought the book so I could read it again. This time I was fortunate to find an unmarked hardcover version. I recall being so intrigued that I could hardly put it down despite the book being so long. "Hanta Yo" is so filled with respect and empathy for The People; it is hard not to feel grief that their rich, and yes, sometimes violent culture, has passed away. Sadly, it appears no culture is free from violence. But gladly, every culture contributes its own richness to our lives despite the negatives.

Since it has been so may years since my first reading of the book, I cannot comment on specifics but I can assure everyone who reads this wonderful saga of the Lakota Souix, will be glad they did.

The pleasure of re-reading this wonderful book is exquisite

The pleasure of re-reading this wonderful book is exquisite. The story is so well written and the subject means so much to me. I realize that this is fictional but it seems so close to how it may have been to experience the spiritual and moral lives of the Dakota people. To me, the writing is so descriptive that it is as though being transported as an observer of the time and place of the original people that we do not know, or never knew.
This really should be required reading in our schools instead of the modified history books being administered to our children by the "progressive" socialist propagandists.
