Some amusing anecdotes, but limited details

This book is certainly a little more candid than I expected it to be. Carlo voices his opinion about a few players, coaches and club directors and staff, which mostly fit in with what the media portrays of them, but this book does give some additional insights. He shares several anecdotes which give some idea of the kind of camaraderie which exists between teammates, most of which are hilarious! He also briefly goes over his contract negotiations with various clubs he has coached (and almost coached), and even provides a copy of his coaching contract with Juventus. Carlo also talks about each of his Champions League finals as a coach.

However, my main disappointment was that he would very quickly go through each of these topics without getting into too much detail. There is no detailed tactical analysis of any football game, not much information about calciopoli and not enough about players which most football fans don't know already. I understand that Carlo still has several years of coaching ahead of him and cannot risk offending anybody, but I did hope for more given that this is an autobiography.

However, Carlo has a good sense of humour which is evident throughout the book and the fact that he has interacted with some of the biggest names in football provides enough material for one to keep turning the pages. Overall, this is a very good read.

Fantastic Read!

I'm not a supporter of Chelsea or Milan or even Serie A but Ancelotti has won many top trophies and I was curious to see what he has to say. This purchase turned out to be a fantastic purchase! The book takes you from his playing days to his start as an assistant on the Italian national team in the World Cup and on wards to the Serie A clubs and Chelsea. The best part of this book is the author never drags on with his stories, each chapter is fairly concise, he focuses a lot on stories and opinions involving the players, managers and directors rather than a certain game or incident. Some examples include off-field activities involving Chelsea and Milan players, his first training session with Kaka, his impressions of the various mangers and directors in Serie A. Overall I feel any fan of European clubs will find it a fairly interesting read!

Great Review of Woodworking

There is a lot we do not know or have forgotten. This book pulls up knowledge that was common in 1900 but is mostly lost today. From using tools to building furniture and out buildings this book literally has it all. Of course, you will be reading about how to use hand tools and make joints that are beyond belief today, but it is a lot of fun even if you decide to build nothing like the items described in the book.

A lot of basic woodworking knowledge is here, and a lot of it is never before heard in the modern world advice. The book is profusely illustrated, but be aware that the illustrations are complex and not very large.

A good book. Worth the price.

There's a lot of great information in this book. If you actually do what Lee is suggesting, interact with the book, I find it hard to believe sales wouldn't follow. Additionally, this is a relatively novel approach for real estate sales books; interactivity. I like it, and I think the author did a stellar job collecting and distilling a lot of great information!

Rodolphe Durand is the GDF-Suez Professor of Strategy at HEC Paris. In 2010 he received the European Academy of Management’s Imagination Lab Foundation Award for Innovative Scholarship. His work has been published widely in academic journals. Jean-Philippe Vergne is an assistant professor of strategy at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. His ongoing research on the global arms industry received the inaugural Grigor McClelland Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2011.

Timid and tame

I expected more of a book about piracy as pertains to economics and capitalism, especially with such a splashy cover, and supposedly embracing ideas from Deleuze, Guattari, and Sloterdijk. Instead, the authors seem to almost want to reassure State-run capitalism that any naughty pirates out there are actually a beneficial force and will soon be happily absorbed into the system. It's ironic that the spirit of the Outlaw is precisely what's missing from this book. A few nice ideas scattered amidst a whole lotta text. Intelligent writing for the most part, but timid and tame. This probably made for an interesting paper once (downloadable through their website) and became a book by adding useless filler. Too bad. Not the worst thing I've read recently, but nothing significant gained by the effort in this case.

How non-conformists influence capitalism

Piracy could very well be one of the drivers of capitalism's growth and evolution, according to Rodolphe Durand and Jean-Philippe Vergne in this book. Pirates have appeared at major turning points in the history of capitalism: when capitalism began to spread along the trading routes towards the West Indies, when radio opened an era of mass communication, when the Internet became part of the global economy, and when the biotech revolution began.

To support their argument, the authors have adopted a special definition of "pirate". Humble Somali pirates who rake in mere tens of millions of dollars with their banditry do not qualify. Instead, true pirates have the following characteristics:

* they enter into a conflictive "relationship" with the state, especially when the state claims to be the sole source of sovereignty;
* they operate in an organized manner on uncharted territory, from a set of support bases located outside this territory, over which the state typically claims sovereign control;
* they develop, as alternative communities, a series of discordant norms that, according to them, should be used to regulate uncharted territory; and
* ultimately, they represent a threat to the state by contesting the state's control and the activities of the legal entities that operate under its jurisdiction, such as for-profit corporations and monopolies.

The authors draw a distinction between pirates, who operate as enemies to all states, and corsairs, who are sponsored by one state but regarded as pirates by other states. Thus Sir Francis Drake was part pirate and part corsair, and Chinese hackers who steal information from Western companies are sometimes corsairs.

According to the authors, the pirates of the Caribbean and Madagascar pioneered a number of important institutions. A pirate captain was elected on the democratic vote of all members of the pirate organization. The captain was in charge of maritime operations, but the quartermaster was in charge of distributing rations and booty and managing conflicts, so that a form of separation of powers existed. Pirate captains did not get preferential treatment; equality prevailed. The wounded were given extra pay, an early form of social insurance. Thus pirates pioneered democracy, separation of powers, equality and social insurance.

The book provides interesting ideas about pirate radio stations and anti-copyright activists, but when Wikileaks and patent trolls are referred to as pirates, the analogy seems to have been stretched a bit too far. Pirates are portrayed more as Gilbert-and-Sullivan-style do-gooders than as the violent aggressors that they always have been and Somali pirates still are. Nonetheless the book contains plenty of thought-provoking discussion about the impact of non-conformist organizations on the evolution of capitalism.

Fun Read with a Few Caveats....

This is a book for people who already have a firm grounding in the history of piracy. If you do, then you are in for a treat as the reader gets an enjoyable analysis of piracy past and present. This reading of piracy is from France so it has less to do with the objective world than it does the world of textuality and endlessly defining and re-defining this textuality.

If you are familiar with post-structuralism the reader will get more out of the book then if they weren't. There is also a left of center reading of piracy and its relationship to capitalism. This part of the text is less convincing, but still fascinating.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars.

Worth a look if you are a critic of capitalism but still see a future for and if you enjoy late capitalist post-structural thought without the jargon.

Just so-so

Though the book covers a wide range of both up-and-coming as well as established designers, to be honest, if i would have had the chance to page through it I wouldn't have purchased it. I was looking for inspiring fashion illustration, but what this book confirmed for me is that fashion illustration is best done by fashion illustrators, not fashion designers. I agree with other that comment that the cover is deceiving-- but not because, like other commenters, I DIDN"T like it, but because I LOVE the cover illustration and hoped that similarly fresh, contemporary, and cutting edge drawings would be inside. Instead, most of the illustration is in a very generic minimalist fashion design style (you know the generic line/stick figure body drawn with sweeping strokes to represent draped cloth) or very dated a la 80s-90s (probably because most of the designers featured were in school about that time and continue drawing their sketches in the style they developed in school). Most of the drawings are more functional for the designer rather than original but don't contain technical notes on garment construction.

I was hoping to buy a book I could pour over, and really sink my teeth into each drawing, but most of the drawings are minimalist, generically styled, or dated looking. I also assumed, even if the actual drawing didn't inspire, that the book would provide a really inside, intimate look into the creative process with handwritten notes or detailed description, but alas, it does not. The book covers a huge range of designers offering a few illustrations from each along side a very brief half-paragraph about who they are (often information you could find in wikipedia). It seems more quantity over quality.

To be fair though:

there are some really original drawings by Hanuk kim, Costello Tagliapietra, antonio ciutto, aitor throup, ricardo tisci, lovisa burfitt, and over course the cover artist Alena Akhumadullina.

The book is large and comes in a very sturdy hardback cover, making it an ideal coffee table book.

There are contemporary 'it' designers like Rodarte, Badgley Mischka, etc along side legends like YSL, Lagerfeld, betsey johnson, etc.

Stylishly Sketched

An exciting collection of drawings, paintings and illustrations created by international fashion designers showing (once and for all) the tremendous variety of drawing styles one can use to communicate ideas for clothing and accessories design. From the classically trained drawing skills to the uniquely stylized,personal work to a few using the computer.Most of the work looks hand drawn with energy and passion. A welcome change from the many books showcasing cold, high-tech-HACK work with no individuality.
This is not a How-to-draw-fashion book (and thank god!) for there are far too many of those HACK-books: dreadfully boring, mediocre, unstylish and uninspiring books that never seems to be in touch with ANY kind fashion. This is the kind of book that really inspires a fashion professional or student.
The cover seems a very odd choice considering all the knock-out art inside. Alot of people have mentioned they would never be attracted to open the book based on the cover.
